Start With Looking, Not Memorizing
Art history starts with noticing what an image is doing.
A painting does not need to be decoded immediately. The first step is simply noticing. What is bright? What is hidden? Where does your eye go first? Before art history becomes a list of movements and dates, it begins as an act of attention.
This is especially useful for visual learners. Instead of starting with the artist’s biography, begin with the image itself. Look at the composition, the gesture, the color, the light, and the mood. Once the visual structure makes sense, the history has somewhere to attach.
